Crafting Le Shanahan re-inspired my passion for knitting and reawakened my hands to this glorious craft. Named after my mama, who loves to sport striped collar button-downs, this sweater sparked my own collar-and-stripes obsession.

It first fluttered in as a daydream while commuting to my college in the suburbs of Athens, Greece. The yarn and colors were then chosen at Μαλλιά Σακαλάκ, one of the oldest yarn stores in the city.

I began knitting it in the backseat of a car during our four-hour drive from Athens to Meteora, a monastic mountain village crowned with twelve ancient monasteries. The sweater grew on the four-hour ferry ride from Athens to Mylos—a small island with caves, lunar landscapes, and an energy that feels like Atlantis. We traveled there in winter. The island was freezing and nearly desolate as I knit through wind and rainstorms, feeling the clear, glorious air, sea, and sky.

Back in Athens, it came together between commutes, in crowded trains and buses, in classrooms, and in restful moments at home with podcasts and books as company.

And so it is that Le Shanahan, a one-of-one handmade dream-jewel, was born from the earth and dreamscape.
