Her Daydream, Part I

Somewhere, a little girl daydreamed about a teeny-tiny grey fairy playing among a field of light pink roses beneath fluffy white clouds. That little daydreaming girl imagined she herself was the grey-fairy and that the roses were her closest friends. The fairy whispered made-up stories about the creatures on the mud-earth far down below them. 

“... and that’s how Sir Caterpillar and Sir Ant met and fell in love,” she giggled into the rose’s tender buds. 

All day she spoke to the roses, asking them questions about their lives. 

How did you grow to be so tall? Will I ever grow as tall as you? Do you know how you came to be alive?

The little girl—just like the grey fairy she imagined—was curious about everything. The roses listened with enchanted amusement and answered her wonderings with play.

What to you dream about when you sleep? Her soft voice wondered to the roses.

At night, the fairy curled up inside of the buds of a single pink rose as the rose sang sugar-laced lullabies over her whole being. Tucked into the soft folds of its petals, wrapped in sweet song, the fairy felt safe and complete-- ready to adventure deeper into Dream.

This sweater was inspired by that little girl’s daydream, evoking the greys of the fairy, the light pink roses, and the white clouds above them all. I began knitting it in Athens, Greece, and completed it in Rhinebeck, New York.

And so Softly Spoken, a one-of-one handmade dream-jewel, was born from the earth and dreamscape.
